The Sarcophagus

Source one: Sarcophagus of Tutankhamen

A sarcophagus was the outside of a royal mummy’s coffin. The sarcophagus was made to give protection to the deceased and to stop tomb robbers from attempting to rob the coffin.

It was usually in a human shape because it held a preserved body but was originally in a box shape throughout the first dynasties. It was most commonly painted and decorated with representations of the deceased. It was the outer layer of the coffin and contained many layers within. The materials of the sarcophagus was made depending on how royal and on the status of the deceased.
